Presented at Yard Space Gallery along with work by Gigi Cheri
Breathing Room is a reflection of the moments between, caught in space and time. Acknowledging what is between
here and there;
inside and outside;
past present;
mine and yours;
me and you,
is evidence of the story that is missing.
How does looking beyond illustrate more than does focus?
40-minute installation
Working with sound, space and the moving image, I am considering the space between things, looking at the fractures and relations across space and time, and the things we marry more often than differentiate. The imagery both projected and apparent communicates through what is withheld. The space is empty, bated, yet inseparable from the life that it has housed. Visualizations of breath, confessions, and asks still occupy in their absence. The soundtrack, which travels between rooms, offers potential only in recognition of what came before. What structures do we really need to envisage a story?
What might be the most prominent audible feature of this installation is the presence of breath. The research behind “Breathing Room” explored breathwork and its physiological effects on the body. Speaking is an extended process of exhalation and breath is the space between sentiments, where what we say lands and when we prepare ourselves to share. What happens to us physically when we share our stories? How does this affect the space around us?
