GSMD 550 Directed Study

Phase II

At this time, I was focusing on exploring my main design research directions for the core class, as I was talking to my supervisor, designing household items is not the main goal of this master’s degree, but I really got a passion for designing lights, so I persuade my partner to see if we can have some ideas developing around the lighting system.

In the second phase, we have moved forward to the next design competition, we don’t want to limit ourselves to only two design awards, so we decided to research into some other design awards first.

We found this design award leaving a great range of freedom for us to explore the topic. We decided to have the projects always on going and we can join the competition anytime.

Keep going on with the lighting idea, as I was trying to finish my project 3 for the core class, I got this nature-inspired idea sparks. It was a very helpful process that courses overlaps and supports each other in sharing some ideas.

The more technology evolves, the closer it will be to the form of life. —— Kenya Hara

Alive design: Constantly moving between environments, always maintaining a state of balance and personality, this is what life looks like.

The light is made from acrylic panels and fibretek material, which is a more sustainable material made with paper but has a strong tension of use. Tri-lit is mimicking two tones of light that I saw on the reflection of the window by chance. The light changes its tone with the rotation.

1/2 light is made from the wood panel, acrylic boards, and LED stripe, its concept is inspired by my previous confusion about the program. I want to remind myself with this light that things are not only front and back, there’s some way more than that, and not trouble myself in a single perspective which may be just a half of the whole situation. Also, this pandemic situation is separating our lives into a 1/2 situation, so I want to express it through my design practices.

We are having several other designs that reflecting the main idea of “Wildly mimic, freely design”

We are exploring material research right now and starting to manufacture more design ideas in physical life. For now, there are 4 ideas in progress waiting for joining the next design awards.

It has been a productive semester that I initially wished to achieve. This is the first time I started doing independent projects without a course guideline, and I really appreciate having this opportunity to have Dimeji giving some lectures in between and guide us through the semester.
