Action 8 – Let it Shine

“Maybe you’ll find direction, around some corner where it’s been waiting to meet you” – Robert Hunter

During Action 7, I was given the opportunity to see a project Chiara Schmidtt was working on and it blew me away. The way the light reflected/refracted through the sage paper lamp was mesmerizing.

As I began to move out of Action 7, I could not get this out of my head. I started thinking about the mixed material I was working with and how lighting could change they dynamic. I began to research into Robert Irwin’s work, particularly on the way intervention between the space and the object. I needed to investigate more closely so I visited a Souq Market at night to try to capture as many sources of light as I could.

After continuing my discussion with Chiara, I decided to expand on some interesting ideas and projects that had been part of her practice.

For this action, I would investigate Lighting Design through Space Manipulation.

I would build some light boxes and use LED’s to change the composition of my studio.

In the end, the result was a bit different than I what I had started out to accomplish. However, it did highlight some of my previous studio work in new exciting ways. I’m quite motivated by the result to being experimenting within mixed material (wood and resin) and see what I can create.

*credit to Chiara Schmidtt for her work and help with this action, I do believe it was her project that truly informed my action
