Zoë Laycock is a multidisciplinary artist who is completing her Master of Fine Arts degree. She holds a BFA in Visual Arts from Emily Carr University of Art + Design, and minor in Social Practice and Community Engagement.
Zoë works in a variety of mediums including textiles, video, sound, printmaking, beadwork, paint, and collage as well as other exploratory materials. Born in Calgary AB she is Anishinaabe Métis with the privilege of growing up immersed and with a strong connection in her culture. Before her time at Emily Carr University, she worked with her family run non-profit organization for their urban indigenous community in Calgary, AB. Zoë takes pride in advocating for her many communities to build and maintain them as strong, resilient, and thriving.
She has always felt the urge to challenge the perspectives of the socially accepted in all aspects of her life, while maintaining the importance of cultural respect and integrity. Zoe maintained strong cultural connection growing up in an urban setting; the importance of protocol and reciprocal relationships to the land remains forefront. This value was further fostered within her the more she traveled the world. She works currently with themes involving the natural and supernatural worlds, spirits of place, memory, cyclical and non-human notions of time, reflection of ritual, as well as introspected works engaging on home, diaspora, and identity.
