Action I | Fiction Explorations
For this first action, I decided to explore design fiction. I knew I wanted it to be related to climate action and climate change, but I was unsure of a narrative and how to present it. After reading about design fiction and seeing some examples, I started brainstorming and coming up with some “What-if” questions and scenarios. Following this, I decided I wanted to create a design fiction that was not focused on a product, but that was more of a thought experiment or a provocation.
Although during our studio class I set the intention of making a positive scenario, I spent the entire week trying and found it quite difficult.
Continuing with the brainstorming, I became drawn to the idea of pointing to a detachment of community, to what it is to belong and engage with a community, and to contrast it with individualistic thinking.
In the end, I made some quick sketches of a narrative that had two different paths or scenarios. They both start with the person being confronted with the world in crisis, but they are given a choice to get involved in the community and do the work to help the world or to pay a fee and wake up once the world is not being destroyed anymore. Both scenarios end on the same frame; however, the life led is different and that is one reflection I wanted to put forth.
I found that a very interesting and provoking part of this process was to actually come up with some “what-if” questions. Therefore, as a part of the outcome of this, I illustrated some of these “what-if” questions/reflections for the viewer to reflect on the world and the systems we have in place.
