Bio/ One Pager

Maru Aponte is a painter from the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico. Her practice consists of making observational watercolours outside in the landscape as a starting point for paintings to develop their language in the studio. Her focus in painting is concentrated in materiality, colour and light. She studied two years of her undergrad in The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In search of deeper learning in painting she moved to Antwerp, Belgium where she was the first Puerto Rican to graduate from The Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp from the painting department. She is currently pursuing her MFA in Emily Carr University in Vancouver,BC, Canada.
